Gopher Tortoise Rescue

I met some really great folks this weekend and learned a lot about gopher tortoises too. I posted a bunch of pictures on Flickr showing a couple of the digs. In Florida, developers bury gopher tortoises alive when they build subdivisions, and commercial properties. It can take a year for the tortoises to die and they die of starvation and dehydration. Sometimes you get a developer who wants to do the right thing and lets groups on to the property to dig the tortoises out. This developer was one of the good guys and decided to save as many of the tortoises that could be saved. There was a tremendous community response. People really did want to help!
