According to the New York Times, congress is looking hard at a cabron recuction economy and how to cut carbon emissions. This is why we neeed to look carefully at who we elect. We need those who will move us in this direction, not back to the 20th century, where it didn't matter.

I don't know, but it sounds like WalMart is starting to get it. I really struggle with this. I hate shopping at Walmart but I applaud them for their efforts for greening the supply chain. It seems like the are willing to use their muscle to force a change for the better. I'm still not convinced they are genuine. I have to see more evidence before I will shop there.

Some food that are doused in pesticides

According to Daily Green, here are some foods that are doused in so many pesticides that the organic version would be a wiser consumer choice. I'm a vegetarian and so these are some of the foods I eat on a regular basis. Thankfully, I live near a Whole Foods. I also shop at Publix. They are getting a better and better selection. I know Walmart is "supposed" to be going green. I am not a fan of Walmart. I feel like I'm going into the back part of a grocery store, where only employees go, when I shop there. But I am glad to see that they are starting to carry more organic foods. I know that there are issues surrounding their presence in this market. They can drive down standards in the effort to drive down prices. But anything we can do to eliminate the pesticides we are pouring into the environment will help. So the more hands the better. Sometimes we just have to hold our noses and accept that everyone needs to become part of the change that has to take place.

Al Gore joins Kleiner, Perkins, Caulfield and Byers

This is quite noteworthy. Former vice president Al Gore has become a partner in Silicon Valley's top venture capital firm, Kleiner, Perkins, Caulfield and Byers. These guys were the early investors in Google. I'm so happy for him.

China's latest eco-friendly move

I read it Jared Diamond's book, "Collapse" that one good thing about dictatorships is that the government can easily "mandate" something and people have to comply. I'd rather live in a democracy, however, here is one example of Diamond's argument. China as banned the use of plastic bags. This is great news!

Why Green Buildings

The U.S. Department of Energy says that conventional buildings in the U.S eat up 71 percent of the country’s electricity output and are responsible for 38 percent of the U.S.' carbon dioxide emissions, equal to the combined total emissions of Japan, France and the U.K., according to Forbes magazine. A study done by MIT showed that buildings following LEED standards use on average 25 percent to 30 percent less energy than conventional buildings and cost, on average, only 2 percent more to build. That could help slow down the carbon imbalance we are creating.

Changed my URL today

It use to be Global-Netizen and the name GreenNeitzen. I finally decided to take the plunge and change the URL to match the name. I hope I don't lose a lot of readers. I hope they will find me at this new URL. Next step is to try to modify the template and make it more "green" looking. This blog started out as an experiment, so I could learn about it and see if it made sense for me. It has been three years now and I'm still interested. I guess I'm hooked.

The dirty little secret is out. Groups like Greenpeace are starting to get the word out. Trash from modern industrialization is starting to impact the oceans eco-system. Here is an animation and a new book titled, "Planet Ocean," that explains the nightmare that our throw away consumer life style is creating in our oceans.

Why do reporters shy away from asking Climate Change or Global Warming questions?

There are a ton of good environmental questions reoorters could ask but don't. Ever wonder why? I have seen two of these petitions circulate on the Internet now. Environmental advocates are asking "why" don't reporters ask important questions about climate change? Here is a website you can go to to sign a petition asking this question. Of course, it could be just an attempt to gather e-mail addresses so they can spam you later. We will see, if some of the pundits start asking about environmental issues in the debates, we'll know that our petitions have made some kind of impact.

Why do people run from environmantal issues?

Why more people aren’t aware of green issues? That is the question I have been pondering this week.

I wish Green/Environmental issues could a little more “fun.” They are so serious and most people shy away from them. We need to find a way to make people feel good about being eco-friendly. I found a good example this week by accident.

Someone very close to me is fighting cancer. The treatment for cancer this particular type of cancer is radiology and chemotherapy. We went to visit the radiologist this week and when I walked in to the office, I was totally surprised. I found the waiting room to be most interesting. It had an atmosphere that was very uplifting. The waiting room was filled with bright wonderful murals. The music was uplifting; the receptionist knew everyone by name and greeted them cheerfully. There were home made cookies and goodies for patients to eat. The décor looked more like an exotic vacation resort that reminded people of pleasant places. Even though it was a doctor’s office delivering radiology to very ill patients, it felt good to be there.

I know for myself, when the possibility of cancer first came to light, after the initial shock; I tricked myself into thinking “everything would be just fine.” I was in a state of denial for several weeks. Like Scarlet O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, I simply could not think about it and had to go on like nothing had changed. I think sometimes environmental messages of doom and glooms are similar. We hear it but then we go into a state of denial and pretend that it won’t impact us and that everything will be OK. I have moved from a state of panic and fear, to a denial and finally acceptance and trying to find a plan of action that will generate positive results. I still have to believe that everything will be OK or I could not get up in the morning…


I feel those same things when I think about environmental issues that we are facing in the next fifty to one hundred years. It’s too big of a problem for one person to face. How do we take on the problem so we can begin healing and keep a positive mental outlook? How do we change our behavior and our consumption habits so that we can begin to heal? How do we make others understand why this is a serious issue but still give them hope?

The radiation therapy is going to be a very painful experience. The end result is supposed to make it better though; at least we hope. Going to the doctor’s office however will be a pleasant experience. How can we make going to the Green Doctor and learning how to live Green be a more satisfactory experience?

I've had a few days off from work and have been trying to pick up where I left off this summer. I wish there was more universities that offer degrees, seminars, certificates in sustainable development. Wikipedia had a good write up about the difference between what "sustainable development" and "green development." Both are important but with slight differences. Cornell and Yale are giants in these movements. I'm anxious to read Stuart and see hear what he has to say. I wish I could take some classes there...

New Eco-word: Waste-berg

I love these new "eco words" popping up. Here is a new one I found in an article that talks about the printing of magazines. "....Paper usage is just the tip of the waste-berg." Not ready to give up my magazines but I do recycle them. I do wonder if there is a better way though.

Wolf Blitzer Ignores Climate Change

Dialy Green points out how Wolf Blitz ignores environmental issues. I'm glad I'm not the only one that notices it. I guess people have to be dieing before they/he will mention that we might have a problem. I wish Lou Dobbs or Keith Olbermann would take on the issues that are impacting the environment.
